Getting Started
What is Bit:Ventures?
Bit:Ventures is an educational platform that teaches coding and robotics using the BBC micro:bit. Our 12-week curriculum is designed for students in grades 4-6, providing hands-on learning experiences through interactive lessons and projects.
Do I need a micro:bit to start learning?
While having a physical micro:bit enhances the learning experience, you can start with our online simulator. The first few lessons work entirely with the built-in simulator, and you can purchase a micro:bit kit through our shop when you're ready for hands-on projects.
How do I create an account?
Click the "Register" button in the top right corner. You'll need to provide your name, email address, and create a password. For students under 13, parental consent may be required.
Lessons & Progress
Why can't I access certain lessons?
Lessons unlock progressively. You need to complete the previous week's lessons with at least 80% completion to unlock the next week. This ensures you have the foundational knowledge needed for more advanced concepts.
How does the star rating system work?
Each lesson can earn up to 5 stars based on your completion percentage and understanding. Stars are awarded for completing steps, answering questions correctly, and successfully running your code. You can retake lessons to improve your star rating.
Can I go back and review previous lessons?
Absolutely! Once you've completed a lesson, you can return to it anytime to review concepts, try new variations, or improve your understanding. All completed lessons remain accessible.
Technical Issues
The MakeCode editor won't load. What should I do?
Try refreshing the page first. If that doesn't work, check your internet connection and ensure your browser allows iframe content. You can also try opening MakeCode directly at makecode.microbit.org.
My micro:bit won't connect to my computer
Try a different USB cable, as some cables only provide power but not data connection. Make sure the micro:bit is properly connected and appears as a drive on your computer. You may need to install drivers for older computers.
My code downloads but doesn't work on the micro:bit
Make sure you're downloading the .hex file and copying it completely to the micro:bit drive. Wait for the yellow LED to stop flashing before disconnecting. If problems persist, try downloading and flashing the code again.
Account & Settings
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
On the login page, click "Forgot Password" and enter your email address. We'll send you a link to reset your password. Check your spam folder if you don't see the email within a few minutes.
Can I change my username or email?
Currently, email changes require contacting support. You can update your display name and other profile information through your account settings.
Is my progress saved automatically?
Yes! Your progress is automatically saved as you complete lesson steps. You can safely close your browser and return later to continue where you left off.
Micro:bit Hardware
What's the difference between micro:bit v1 and v2?
Micro:bit v2 has additional features like a speaker, microphone, and touch sensor. Both versions work with our curriculum, but v2 enables more advanced projects in later weeks. We recommend v2 for the full learning experience.
What accessories do I need?
For the basic curriculum, you only need a micro:bit and USB cable. Later projects may use LEDs, buzzers, and sensors which can be purchased through our shop or electronics retailers.
How do I care for my micro:bit?
Keep your micro:bit clean and dry. Handle it by the edges to avoid damaging components. Store it in a safe place when not in use. Avoid static electricity and extreme temperatures.
